PRESS RELEASE

Innovative Spectrum Utilization Analysis for ATSC 3.0

The rollout of ATSC 3.0 across the Unties States highlights datacasting as the new mean for content and data delivery. Effective spectrum utilization by modern communication and broadcast technologies becomes vital as new services emerge and consume extremely limited spectral resources. To assist the industry Avateq Corp. introduces an innovative Spectrum Utilization Analysis for practical in-field estimation and adaptive controlling of the ATSC3.0 RF channel fill factor. The tool is now included in all Avateq's ATSC 3.0-enabled products.

ATSC3.0 Physical layer standard offers the most innovative techniques in signal coding schemes. The latest technology with a wide range of available operating modes allows selecting optimal modulation and coding parameters depending on the targeted and practically achievable RF channel throughput under real propagation conditions with a desired level of robustness.

The introduced innovative approach is based on dynamic estimation of the channel "link margin" as headroom for the potential limit of SNR level for the currently used modulation and coding scheme. Based on the link margin, a detailed estimation of ATSC 3.0 RF channel utilization at any point of the service area can be characterized by current and potentially achievable bitrate, spectral efficiency, and RF channel fill factor.

The developed technique suggests an alternative modulation coding scheme and configurations to maximize throughput. The suggested configurations can be used to adaptively increase the RF channel utilization by increasing the bitrate which can lead to improving QoS and more effective usage of the spectral resources, especially for stationary datacasting applications.

Experimental tests have confirmed that dynamic control based on the suggested configurations can improve channel utilization up to 30% over time by adaptively adjusting modulation and coding to dynamic changes in the signal propagation conditions. This opens new opportunities for ATSC3.0 Physical Layer to be used in novel non-broadcast applications.

By implementing link margin analytics within all its products, Avateq helps content providers and data distributors to bring ATSC3.0 datacasting to a new level by increasing the quality of service and optimizing RF channel utilization.
